Subject : Reading Program
Course Name : Honors Reading Navigator-Elementary

1 hour program (up to 4 students)
Students read one book a week in accordance with their reading and grade level. Along with the novel, students will be given a worksheet containing questions based on the novel, as well as a section to write down vocabulary words students came across in the novel that they did not know, a week in advance; thus, they will have one week to finish reading the novel and to fill out the worksheet at home. The questions on the worksheet concern the novel’s setting, character analysis, and the students’ reaction to the novel as a whole; they are asked to discuss the conflict which took place in the novel and its resolution; they are also asked to provide a summary of the novel’s plot. In class, students first take a computer-based reading comprehension test, and then are given a worksheet containing open-ended interpretive questions, which will force kids to dig deeper into the text. They also write sentences for the vocabulary words they looked up, or they are quizzed on the definitions of those words.
